Healthcare facilities are mandated by the Joint Commision to adhere to many requirements that are focused on patient safety.

Included within the Joint Commissions requirements is strict adherence to ICRA (Infection Control Risk Assessment).

Why: Construction and renovation projects of all sizes carry known risks of increased patient infections due to the contractors lack of environmental engineering controls.

How: Surface and airborne bacteria and fungal spores are easily transported throughtout a facility by air currents, dust, water systems and contaminated materials. Patients with suppressed immune systems are prone to significant infections should these pathogens settle on contact surfaces in a patient room or be inhaled while airborne.

Controlling the health care environment during renovation or construction requires  team members with documented environmental credentials who are trained in ICRA and the use of many engineering controls required to safeguard work areas and to prevent the release of infectious agents such as multi-drug resistant bacteria and Aspergillus spores.
